Ankara: Forest and land fires in West Java province have consumed at least 237 hectares, as reported by local media. The fires have significantly impacted the area, with the highest number of incidents recorded in Sumedang Regency, where 22 fires occurred, according to broadcaster Kompas.

According to Anadolu Agency, the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency recorded a total of 168 fire incidents. These fires have spread across 186 subdistricts in 21 districts and cities, although no residents have been reported injured. The ongoing dry season, exacerbated by El Nino, has created conditions conducive to wildfires.

In July alone, nearly 95,000 hectares were burned across Indonesia, with the Forestry Ministry estimating a nationwide burn of approximately 202,000 hectares by the month's end. The fires have had tragic consequences for wildlife as well. An adult male orangutan, discovered last Sunday in Ketapang regency, died after suffering respiratory issues believed to be caused by thick wildfire smoke. A necropsy showed significant pathological changes in the orangutan's heart, kidneys, and lungs, likely due to smoke exposure, as stated by Murlan Dameria Pane, head of the West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency.
