Forest Fire Claims 11 Lives in Southern Spain’s Almeria Province

Gaza: Los Gallardos At least 11 people lost their lives in a devastating forest fire that erupted on Thursday in the Los Gallardos municipality, situated in Almeria province, within Spain's southern Andalusia region. The incident was reported by broadcaster RTVE.

According to Anadolu Agency, Andalusia's emergency services, the victims were discovered in a hamlet of the neighboring municipality of Bedar. Some were tragically found inside vehicles that had been consumed by the flames. Antonio Sanz, acting minister for health, the presidency, and emergencies in Andalusia, labeled the blaze as "the fire with the greatest consequences to date" in the region, describing it as an "unprecedented tragedy."

The authorities in Andalusia have adjusted the provisional death toll from 12 to 11 as efforts to identify the victims continue. In response to the ongoing threat, the region's wildfire response plan has been elevated to the emergency phase. Spain's Military Emergency Unit has deployed 150 personnel to reinforce the firefighting efforts, as the blaze continues to spread.

The dense smoke and fire have led to the closure of two major roads in the province. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, approximately 1,000 people were evacuated as a precaution due to another forest fire that ignited on Thursday afternoon in Malaga's southern province. Efforts to stabilize this active fire are ongoing, with nearly 180 personnel involved in the operation.
