Amman: The Arab League on Monday appointed former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as the new secretary-general. The appointment was made during the 165th ordinary session of the pan-Arab body held in Amman, the capital of Jordan. Fahmy is set to assume office as the league chief on July 1, succeeding the outgoing Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry highlighted the significance of Fahmy’s selection, noting his extensive diplomatic experience and his contributions to Arab action on both regional and international stages. The ministry conveyed its hopes for Fahmy’s success in his new role, emphasizing the importance of strengthening joint Arab efforts and fulfilling the aspirations of Arab peoples for stability and prosperity.

With his appointment, Nabil Fahmy becomes the ninth secretary-general of the Arab League since its inception in 1945. He is also the eighth Egyptian to be appointed to this prestigious position, reflecting Egypt’s longstanding influence within the organization.
