Baku:East Java At least four individuals lost their lives while attempting to control a wildfire at Mount Bromo in Indonesia's East Java province. The fatalities included two officers from Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and two hotel staff members.
According to Anadolu Agency, the death toll increased to four after one person succumbed to their injuries during a hospital transfer. In addition to the fatalities, two others sustained serious burns and are receiving medical treatment.
Probolinggo District Head Muhammad Haris noted that wildfires in the national park have been a recurring issue nearly every year, but this is the first instance resulting in loss of life. Initially, twelve people were involved in efforts to manage the fire according to standard operating procedures. However, the situation became critical as the fire spread and strong winds forced the team to disperse, leaving six individuals trapped.
The ongoing dry season in Indonesia, exacerbated by El Nino, has made conditions more conducive to wildfires.
