Antalya: France hopes for an 'immediate' and 'unconditional' ceasefire through Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Trkiye, the French foreign minister said.
According to Anadolu Agency, Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized the importance of achieving a ceasefire before the start of day two of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Antalya, Trkiye. Barrot highlighted the need for a ceasefire to pave the way for proper peace negotiations, stressing that Russian President Vladimir Putin's absence at the talks left an 'empty chair' in front of Ukraine 'waiting for' him.
Barrot warned against three pitfalls that could derail the talks: ongoing hostilities during negotiations, forcing Ukraine to demilitarize without security guarantees, and prematurely lifting sanctions. He also noted Russia's desire to avoid the impending sanctions on oil and the financial sector that the US and European nations are preparing.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed Barrot's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of supporting Ukraine and achieving a lasting peace. Lammy praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's willingness to engage in peace talks in Trkiye and underscored the necessity for Europe to fortify its defenses in collaboration with the US.
Netherlands' Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp pointed out Ukraine's readiness to participate in the talks in Istanbul and the need to apply pressure on Russia to move towards peace. He advocated for increased defense spending in Europe to bolster deterrence.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen criticized Russia's reluctance to engage in serious peace negotiations, while expressing gratitude to Trkiye for hosting the talks. She called for an 'immediate' ceasefire.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed cautious optimism about the peace talks' outcome, urging greater Russian involvement. Tajani also highlighted positive relations between Italy and Trkiye, signaling Italy's willingness to enhance cooperation, particularly in defense.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stressed that any ceasefire should ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and independence, warning of increased sanctions and consequences if Russia fails to commit to peace. He also advocated for increased European defense spending.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys supported Ukraine, the US, and Europe's position for a ceasefire and criticized Putin's strategy of distraction and delay in the peace process.
