France on Friday urged a stronger European pillar of NATO in the face of 'American uncertainty' and 'rising Russian aggression,' amid escalating tensions in the Middle East with the US-Israeli continued attacks on Iran. French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux stressed the necessity for Europe to bolster its 'strategic autonomy' to effectively respond to current geopolitical challenges.

According to Anadolu Agency, Confavreux highlighted the importance of Europe being capable of making independent decisions. He specifically mentioned the need for increased 'defense spending,' revealing that France plans to double its defense budget over a decade from 2017 to 2027. The spokesperson also pointed out that, while France maintains 'dialogue' with the US, there are ongoing differences regarding NATO's role in the Middle East.

Confavreux stated that NATO's focus is on North Atlantic security, making it ill-suited for intervention in the St rait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the conflict in the Strait is considered 'not our war' by France, and military operations to reopen this strategic waterway could be 'unrealistic' and potentially escalate regional tensions.

France's priority remains the restoration of 'freedom of navigation' and planning for a 'military escort of civilian vessels' post-conflict, within a negotiation framework involving Iran. Despite disagreements over 'military operations,' Confavreux noted that France continues its communication with Israel.

The call for a stronger European NATO role comes amid heightened tensions following a joint US-Israeli offensive on Iran, which began on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 casualties, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military forces.
