newly approved death penalty law for Palestinian prisoners as 'inhumane and degrading', following a decision by Israel's parliament, the Knesset, which has sparked international backlash.

According to Anadolu Agency, French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux addressed the issue during a press briefing, stating, "The death penalty is a sanction that is both inhumane and degrading. France advocates for its universal abolition." He further highlighted that France had already articulated its stance through a joint statement with Italy, the UK, and Germany, and reiterated this position following the Knesset's vote, in alignment with all 27 EU member states, expressing 'deep concern' over the development.

Confavreux criticized the law for its 'discriminatory nature' and noted that it contradicts democratic principles and international commitments. The legislation, passed by Israel's Knesset, establishes the death penalty as the default punishment for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank convicted of lethal attacks against Israelis.

He also mentioned that the G7 and Gulf Cooperation Council countries plan to convene next week to discuss the ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz amidst the persistent conflict in the Middle East.

Responding to Israel's Ambassador to Paris Joshua Zarka's remarks that France's position is not 'friendly', Confavreux remarked, "Being a friend sometimes requires saying things honestly." He acknowledged the occasional disagreements with Israeli authorities, adding, "We believe that many of the current government's orientations do not contribute to regional peace or stability."

A dditionally, Confavreux condemned the attacks that resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian members of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He emphasized France's condemnation of any intimidation against its French contingent, a message conveyed firmly to Israel's ambassador during a March 30 meeting at the French Foreign Ministry.

On matters of military overflights, he noted that requests for foreign military aircraft to transit French airspace are reviewed individually, consistent with France's official stance. Confavreux reiterated that France remains uninvolved in the conflict initiated by US and Israeli strikes on Iran and has maintained its stance on such requests since the conflict's onset.

Finally, Confavreux confirmed that France continues to provide Israel with limited defensive military equipment and spare parts.
