Antalya: France on Tuesday announced the expulsion of 12 Algerian officials, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between Paris and Algiers. This move follows Algeria's decision to expel 12 French officials in a tit-for-tat response to recent events.

According to Anadolu Agency, French Foreign Minister Jean Noel-Barrot stated on social media platform X that France is expelling Algerian agents and recalling its ambassador for consultations. He emphasized that the response was a direct reaction to Algeria's decision, which France views as escalating tensions unnecessarily. Barrot noted that while France is open to dialogue, it cannot be one-sided.

The French presidency backed the expulsion, with the Elysee Palace attributing the deterioration in bilateral relations to Algerian authorities. The presidency expressed dismay over Algeria's actions, which it described as unjustified and incomprehensible, highlighting that they ignore fundamental judicial principles.

The Elysee further stated that France would continue to defend its interests and expect Algeria to respect its obligations, particularly concerning national security and migration cooperation. The statement also stressed the importance of resuming dialogue for the benefit of both nations and urged Algerian authorities to act responsibly within the framework of a dialogue initiated earlier this year.

The diplomatic crisis intensified after Algeria ordered the expulsion of 12 French embassy officials within 48 hours, following the indictment of three men in Paris, one of whom was associated with an Algerian consulate, on terrorism-related charges. An Algerian Foreign Ministry statement defended the expulsion as a sovereign decision, criticizing French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau for infringing on Algeria's sovereignty, which led to the diplomatic crisis.

The Algerian statement condemned the arrest of the consular official as libelous and a violation of diplomatic norms, holding Retailleau accountable for the impact on bilateral relations. It warned that any further infringements on Algeria's sovereignty would be met with a firm response based on reciprocity.
