Paris: France demanded an explanation Thursday from Paris Saint-Germain for the "unacceptable" pro-Palestine banners that were displayed by fans during a match. According to Anadolu Agency, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau expressed his concerns on X, stating, "I ask PSG to explain itself and the clubs to ensure that politics does not come to damage sport, which must always remain a source of unity." He emphasized that the banner had no place in the stadium and highlighted that such messages are prohibited by the regulations of the League and UEFA. Retailleau further warned that the government might consider prohibiting banners for clubs that fail to enforce these rules if similar incidents occur in the future. The incident took place during a UEFA Champions League match on Wednesday, where Paris Saint-Germain fans displayed banners in solidarity with Palestine against Atletico Madrid. The fans raised a large banner that read "Free Palestine" in English, along with a smaller one in French stating, "Battl e on the field but peace in the world," before the match kicked off at the Parc des Princes stadium. The prominent banner also included images of Jerusalem's iconic Dome of the Rock Mosque and the Palestinian and Lebanese flags. In the match, Atletico Madrid defeated PSG 2-1 at the Parc des Princes. Warren Zaire-Emery scored first for PSG, but Atletico's Nahuel Molina and Angel Correa managed to score two unanswered goals, securing the victory for their team. This event occurs amidst Israel's ongoing offensive on the Gaza Strip following an attack by the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, on October 7, 2023. The conflict has resulted in nearly 43,500 casualties and left the region nearly uninhabitable. Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.
