Marseille: The French Navy has taken control of an oil tanker originating from Russia, suspected of flying a false flag, in the western Mediterranean. This operation occurred on Friday, as confirmed by the authorities.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Emmanuel Macron announced the operation on the US social media platform X, stating, "This morning in the Mediterranean, the French Navy intercepted and boarded another vessel from the shadow fleet, the Deyna." Macron further criticized these vessels for evading international sanctions and violating maritime laws, labeling them as "profiteers of war" who financially support Russia's war efforts. He also emphasized that France's commitment to supporting Ukraine remains unwavering, despite the ongoing war in Iran.

Maritime authorities have reported that the vessel, the Deyna, was flying a Mozambican flag. However, an onboard inspection revealed that it was operating under a 'false flag,' as reported by Franceinfo. Consequently, the Marseille public prosecutor's office has been informed, and the tanker has been redirected for further investigation.

The Mediterranean Maritime Prefecture stated that the ship is currently under escort by French Navy vessels and is being taken to an anchorage for additional checks.
