Paris:French Education Minister Edouard Geffray has announced a series of initiatives aimed at alleviating pressure on high school students, boosting teaching staff, and funding school renovations. These measures follow recent protests and aim to address various challenges in the education sector.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Geffray stated that the government will cancel 836 planned job cuts in public secondary education and will introduce 500 additional teaching positions in high schools. This decision is part of efforts to reduce academic pressure linked to the Parcoursup university admissions platform, subject specialization, and overcrowded classrooms.
Geffray emphasized the need to decrease school pressure by reducing the number of students per class. Starting in the 2027 school year, second-year high school classes in the least advantaged communities will be capped at 28 students. This measure will extend to more advantaged schools from the 2028 school year.
Additionally, Geffray announced that Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has allocated an extra £4 billion ($4.4 billion) for subsidized-interest loans to regional and departmental authorities. This funding is intended to facilitate quicker renovation work in middle and high schools by providing financing on preferential terms.
