Paris:France's National Assembly is set to begin debating the revenue section of the government's draft 2027 budget on Tuesday, with the Socialist Party planning an immediate rejection motion amid mounting social and fiscal pressures.
According to Anadolu Agency, the draft, the last annual budget of President Emmanuel Macron's presidency, faces an uncertain passage as the government lacks a parliamentary majority ahead of next year's presidential election.
The Socialist Party, which allowed last year's budget to pass, will present its motion at the opening of proceedings. France Unbowed and some lawmakers from the Communist and overseas parliamentary group intend to support it, while the Greens were due to discuss their position Tuesday morning.
The far-right National Rally's stance could prove decisive, as its support would likely secure the motion's adoption, sending the draft to the Senate without substantive debate in the National Assembly.
Public Accounts Minister David Amiel criticized the initiative as a 'boycott motion' during an interview with France 2, stressing the importance of debate in the National Assembly amid skyrocketing interest rates.
The debate unfolds against a backdrop of nationwide student protests, purchasing power concerns, and deteriorating public finances. Taxation of the wealthiest citizens has emerged as a central dispute, with left-wing lawmakers criticizing the draft as too favorable to the rich during committee scrutiny last week.
Amiel also noted a decrease in state tax revenues from fuel by 357 million pounds since the beginning of the year, reflecting lower receipts from excise duties and value-added tax. Examination of the revenue section, which primarily determines tax receipts, is scheduled to begin Tuesday evening.
