Paris: French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot warned Monday that the risk of war in Europe has reached a "high" level, stressing that the "front line is constantly moving closer" to the continent.

According to Anadolu Agency, Barrot made these remarks during an interview with France Inter. He highlighted that for nearly 15 years, threats have been progressively encroaching on Europe, raising serious concerns about the continent's security.

The warning from Barrot comes amidst escalating geopolitical tensions following a public spat between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The disagreement arose on Friday when Zelensky expressed skepticism over Trump's approach to negotiate with Russia to resolve the ongoing Ukraine war. This incident has intensified worries about the future of US support for Kyiv and the cohesion of the transatlantic alliance.

Barrot indicated that the current situation serves as a wake-up call for some European leaders, who have been reluctant to acknowledge the gravity of the threats. He stated, "What we are witnessing today is the awakening of a section of Europeans who refused to see the reality of things."

Despite the increasing threats, Barrot reassured that France remains committed to ensuring long-term stability in the region. He emphasized France's desire for "peace, but a solid peace and a lasting peace," with ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the three-year-long conflict.

Barrot also mentioned that "contacts between Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump are very frequent," as France continues to collaborate with key international partners. In addition, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted a summit in London on Sunday, where European leaders agreed to draft a Ukraine peace plan to propose to the US.

French President Emmanuel Macron informed Le Figaro newspaper that the proposed peace plan includes a one-month ceasefire, applicable to air and sea attacks, but not ground combat.
