French Green Leader Considers Withdrawal to Support United Left in 2027 Election

Paris:French Green Party leader Marine Tondelier announced that she might consider withdrawing from the 2027 presidential race if it would lead to a united left's victory.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Tondelier expressed her commitment to environmental issues and unity while exploring potential cooperation with other candidates. She mentioned that she would step down only if it paved a path to victory for her side.

Tondelier is currently engaged in discussions with various parties and emphasized that any collaboration must include a government program, legislative cooperation, and a unified campaign strategy. The Green Party members are set to vote between December 10 to 13 on whether she should continue her candidacy or withdraw in favor of another contender.

Tondelier defended her candidacy as essential for highlighting environmental issues, while questioning the ecological priorities of rival left-wing candidates Jean-Luc Melenchon and Raphael Glucksmann. She noted that although they are not against environmentalism, it is not inherently part of their agenda.

Within the Greens, there is division over the presidential strategy. Some members, like lawmaker Sandrine Rousseau, support Melenchon, while others, such as Senator Yannick Jadot, back Glucksmann. Meanwhile, some activists advocate for an independent Green candidacy, as reported by BFMTV.

Tondelier cautioned that the left faces bleak prospects without unity, although cooperation is uncertain due to the divide between Glucksmann and Melenchon. She lamented the lack of a primary and a united front, asserting that no single candidate can win alone.
