Paris: French lawmakers passed a resolution backing increased political, economic, and military aid for Ukraine, reinforcing France's commitment to Kyiv in its war with Russia, according to media reports.
According to Anadolu Agency, the symbolic text, adopted late Wednesday in a 288-54 vote, also urges Ukraine's integration into the EU. This resolution underscores the calls for the EU, NATO, and allied nations to enhance their support to Ukraine and expedite Kyiv's EU accession process.
Lawmakers amended the text to advocate for "an independent European defense" and encourage discussions on deploying European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine. A significant point of debate was the potential seizure of Russian assets that are currently frozen in Europe.
The final text "urges the European Union and its member states to proceed without delay with the seizure of frozen and immobilized Russian assets" to finance Ukraine's defense and reconstruction. However, this measure faced opposition from left-wing La France Insoumise (LFI) and far-right National Rally (RN) lawmakers, who argued that it would violate international law.
