Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron hosted his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic on Wednesday at the Elysee Palace for a working lunch, as part of diplomatic engagement between France and Serbia.

According to Anadolu Agency, the meeting was held "to follow up on the discussions initiated during President Macron's visit to Serbia in August 2024," as stated by the French presidency. Macron reaffirmed his belief that Serbia's future lies within the EU and expressed support for Belgrade's continued progress toward EU membership.

The two leaders also addressed a range of bilateral issues, including economic cooperation, energy, culture, health, and defense. These discussions highlight the ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between the two nations.

Vucic's visit comes amid massive protests in Serbia against corruption and for democratic reforms. Some French media outlets criticized the official welcome extended to Vucic, citing concerns over his alleged authoritarian style of governance, which they argue runs counter to the democratic values promoted by the EU.
