French President Macron Declares Confrontation with Russia Amid Airspace Violations

Copenhagen: French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the country is "in confrontation" with Russia following recent alleged airspace violations. Speaking to reporters ahead of the EU leaders' meeting, Macron mentioned that Russia has been a "very aggressive actor" in the European information space for several years, especially in the context of elections, cyberattacks, the war in Ukraine, nuclear threats, and airspace provocations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron emphasized that the European response must be operational, warning that any violation of European airspace could lead to retaliation. He highlighted the importance of strengthening Europe's deterrence capabilities, including long-range missile capabilities, European ballistic capabilities, and enhanced anti-drone defense systems.

Macron also addressed concerns over a tanker spotted off the coast of Saint-Nazaire, suspected of being part of Russia's shadow fleet. He noted "very serious mistakes" committed by the crew, justifying the judicial procedure now underway. While cautious about the tanker's involvement in recent drone sightings in Denmark, Macron pointed to a significant number of ships operating as part of this shadow fleet in various seas.

The Brest prosecutor's office confirmed an investigation into the tanker, immobilized off Saint-Nazaire and believed to belong to the Russian shadow fleet. The tanker, flying the Benin flag, departed from Russia on September 20 and was due in northwest India on October 20, but has remained anchored off the Saint-Nazaire wind farm. The investigation cited a lack of documentation and non-compliance with authorities' instructions, with potential penalties of up to one year in prison and/or a fine of approximately $176,300.
