Paris: A fresh series of attacks struck French prisons overnight, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Monday, warning that the assaults were intended to undermine state authority.

According to Anadolu Agency, prison personnel and detention centers were once again targeted, as confirmed by the minister on X, although no injuries were reported. Darmanin described these acts as intimidation against the Republic during a time when the government is working to restore authority and order within its prisons. He emphasized that this is a challenging yet crucial moment for the state and its agents.

The minister expressed confidence in the ability of law enforcement to apprehend the perpetrators and to resolve the unrest swiftly. Last week, multiple prison facilities across France were targeted in around a dozen attacks, which included arson and gunfire with automatic weapons. These incidents have prompted a nationwide investigation.

Previously, Darmanin labeled the incidents as 'acts of terror,' asserting that authorities would not be intimidated. On Thursday, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau suggested that 'narco scum' might be behind the attacks, although he did not rule out the involvement of far-left groups or foreign powers.

Darmanin and Retailleau are currently working on legislation to enhance drug investigations and plan to establish top-security jails for high-level drug offenders to prevent them from managing criminal networks from prison.
