Paris:Several high schools and universities across France were blocked early Tuesday as thousands of students prepared to protest. This action follows a call by student organizations, as reported by broadcaster BFMTV.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, blockades were seen at educational institutions in cities such as Paris, Marseille, and Toulouse. In Toulouse, 12 out of 13 high schools faced disruptions on Monday. Student organizations in Lille have also urged for continued mobilization, including through demonstrations.
The "Black Tuesday" protest, organized by high school student groups, is expected to extend to Lyon, where a student demonstration has been authorized by local authorities. The Paris police prefecture anticipates between 15,000 and 30,000 demonstrators to gather following the student organizations' call. Although a march from the Pantheon to the Medef headquarters was initially planned, it was banned due to security concerns. An alternative route was proposed and later contested in court.
In Lyon, the Rhone prefecture recorded 900 participants in a peaceful demonstration, whereas youth organizations claimed a turnout of 1,500. Additionally, 17 arrests were made in the Rhone department during activities outside schools, with incidents including mortar fire and property damage reported at certain high schools.
The Higher Education Ministry identified disruptions in 51 higher education institutions out of 184 nationwide on Tuesday morning. The Union Etudiante reported that half of the universities were affected, estimating over 50 campuses blocked. Meanwhile, the National High School Union noted 500 schools blocked, a figure much higher than the 48 reported by the Education Ministry.
The CGT-Interior union has called on ministry staff, including police officers, to join a nationwide strike on November 5, criticizing the 2027 budget for salary freezes and unequal bonus distribution. Although the Paris Administrative Court rejected appeals against the partial ban on the student unions' demonstration plans, the authorized protest route remains between Porte de Charenton and Porte de Montreuil. The Ile-de-France student union Interfac has encouraged students to convene at Jussieu to decide on further actions if the ban holds.
