French Student Unions Plan Renewed Blockades Amid Ongoing Protests

Paris:French student unions have announced plans to renew blockades at universities and high schools beginning next Tuesday, as anti-government protests persist across the nation. The call for action was reported by broadcaster BFMTV on Saturday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Sabrina Kharbach, spokesperson for the Union Etudiante, has urged students to heed the call from high school and student unions, alongside an inter-union coalition, for fresh blockades. The initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes blocking activities again on Thursday and participating in a demonstration on November 5, organized by striking workers.

Manon Moret, secretary-general of the National Union of French Students (UNEF), highlighted the lack of a concrete government response to the demands of young people. The ongoing mobilization marks the third nationwide day of social action in three weeks, with approximately 350 events scheduled across France.

The French government has labeled the demonstrations as high-risk, expressing concerns about potential attempts to obstruct the Paris ring road or target government buildings. In response, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has announced the deployment of around 70,000 police and gendarmes nationwide to maintain order.

In a related development, the Council of State in Paris overturned an administrative court ruling, thereby permitting the demonstration route from Bagnolet to Charenton to proceed.
