Ankara: Gaza's healthcare system is a "broken shell" and "barely functioning," according to Doctors Without Borders' (MSF) deputy medical coordinator in the enclave. In a statement released on Thursday, Dr. Mohammed Abu Mughaisib highlighted the dire state of medical facilities amid ongoing conflict in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, Dr. Abu Mughaisib detailed the overwhelming challenges faced by MSF's medical facilities, which are dealing with an unprecedented influx of patients. He criticized the food distribution points supported by Israel through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), describing them as a "new horror" due to attacks that have turned these sites into dangerous areas for civilians seeking aid.

Dr. Abu Mughaisib pointed out that hospitals are overrun, leading to fatalities before patients can receive treatment. He lamented that wounds treatable elsewhere become fatal in Gaza's current conditions. The healthcare system, already fragile, is struggling to survive under the pressure of patient numbers, supply chain disruptions, hunger, and civilian targeting.

Emphasizing the need for immediate action, Dr. Abu Mughaisib called for a ceasefire and sustained humanitarian access to prevent further collapse of the healthcare system. He warned that without these measures, the future of Gaza's medical infrastructure and its ability to save lives is at risk.

The Israeli army has continued its military operations in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, resulting in significant casualties. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders for alleged war crimes, and Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
