Gaza: Palestinian Italian journalist and author Rula Jebreal stated that the Gaza Strip has become a cemetery for children and a graveyard for international law. Jebreal, known for her influential book 'Genocide: What Remains of Us in the Neo-Imperial Era,' has been actively raising awareness about the dire situation in Gaza among the Italian public.
According to Anadolu Agency, Jebreal expressed her intent to awaken global consciousness through her book, warning against the brutal practices in Gaza which she fears are becoming normalized worldwide. The book's cover features a poignant photograph by Anadolu's Gaza-based photojournalist Ali Jadallah, capturing a woman and her daughter fleeing amidst the devastation, symbolizing the collapse of humanity.
Jebreal also discussed ongoing conflicts in regions like Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iran, emphasizing the importance of remembering these crises as part of a broader global genocide. She criticized the positions of the US, Italy, and European nations, accusing them of complicity and suggesting that international law is selectively applied.
She further condemned the prioritization of arms sales over justice, warning of the dangers facing humanity. Jebreal pointed out the growing opposition among the Italian public towards the actions in Gaza and highlighted a disconnect between civil society and government actions.
She noted the unprecedented global opposition to the events in Gaza, with 90% of the world's population reportedly against it, yet Western governments continue their support, which she argued could lead to social and political unrest.
Jebreal called for immediate action to stop the genocide, urging nations to adhere to the Genocide Convention. She advocated for sanctions, an arms embargo, and a Nuremberg-style trial for those responsible, including key Israeli figures, to hold the Israeli government accountable.
She concluded by emphasizing the importance of conveying that no one has the right to commit atrocities against children, women, or medical facilities, denouncing the ongoing colonial genocide in Gaza.
