German Corporate Insolvencies Surge to 13-Year High in July

Jakarta:Corporate insolvencies in Germany reached their highest monthly level in 13 years in July, registering 2,373 cases. This marks an 8% increase compared to the same month last year, based on official data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

According to Anadolu Agency, The July figure is the highest since July 2013, when 2,459 insolvency cases were recorded. In the first seven months of 2026, there was a 6.9% year-on-year increase in corporate insolvencies, totaling 15,185 cases.

Creditors' claims associated with these insolvencies amounted to approximately £21.9 billion ($25.4 billion), a decrease from £31.8 billion during the same period last year. Destatis explained that the drop in claims is due to more economically significant companies having filed for insolvency in the previous year, from January to July 2025.

The transport and storage sector experienced the highest insolvency rate in the first seven months of this year, with 85.5 cases per 10,000 companies. This is nearly double the overall rate of 42.8. Accommodation and food services followed with 70 cases per 10,000 companies, and the construction sector reported 62.9 cases.

Consumer insolvencies, on the other hand, fell by 5.9% year on year to 7,111 cases in July. However, the total number of consumer insolvencies for the January-July period increased by 1% from the previous year, reaching 46,043 cases.

Destatis highlighted that insolvency applications are only included in the statistics after a court's initial decision, which typically occurs about three months after the original filing.
