German Exports Decline in August Amid Drop in US Shipments

Ankara:Germany's exports experienced a 0.8% decline in August compared to the previous month, while imports saw an increase, resulting in a narrower trade surplus, as revealed by official data.

According to Anadolu Agency, the country's exports amounted to £137.6 billion ($154.1 billion), with imports rising by 0.9% to £118.1 billion, based on provisional figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

The trade surplus decreased to £19.5 billion ($21.8 billion) from £21.6 billion in July, though it surpassed the market expectation of £19 billion ($21.3 billion). In August of the previous year, the surplus stood at £17.6 billion.

Compared to August 2025, there was a 6.2% increase in exports and a 5.5% rise in imports. Shipments to the US, Germany's largest export destination for the month, fell 6.3% from July, totaling £13.5 billion. Nevertheless, exports to the US remained 22.6% higher than the previous year.

Exports to the UK increased significantly by 16.7% month on month to £7.9 billion, while shipments to China rose 4.7% to £5.9 billion. Imports from China, Germany's largest source of imported goods, surged by 11% to £16.8 billion. Imports from the US decreased by 0.5% to £8.1 billion, and those from the UK dropped 3.8% to £3.2 billion.

German exports to EU member states fell 0.6% to £77.5 billion, and imports from the bloc decreased by 0.4% to £59.3 billion. Within the EU, exports to euro area countries increased by 0.8%, while shipments to member states outside the currency bloc declined by 3.5%.

Exports to countries outside the EU fell by 1.1% to £60 billion, whereas imports increased by 2.2% to £58.8 billion. In the first eight months of 2026, Germany's calendar and seasonally adjusted exports totaled £1.09 trillion, marking a 4.4% increase from the same period last year.
