German Government Debt Reaches $3.2 Trillion in 2025

Berlin: General government debt in Germany increased significantly in 2025, reaching a total of £2.84 trillion ($3.2 trillion). The rise in debt was marked by a £144 billion ($162.7 billion) increase from the previous year. According to Anadolu Agency, central government debt, including its off-budget entities, saw a substantial rise of £107 billion. Additionally, state and local governments recorded increases of £19 billion and £25 billion, respectively. The debt of social security funds more than doubled within this period, contributing to a 1.3 percentage point rise in the debt ratio, which reached 63.5%. The nominal growth of Germany's GDP played a role in reducing the debt ratio by two percentage points. However, this was offset by debt growth, which increased the debt ratio by 3.3 percentage points in arithmetic terms. Notably, the increase in debt surpassed the general government deficit of £119 billion reported by the Federal Statistical Office. The average EUR/USD exchange rate last year was 1.13.
