Berlin: Germany’s opposition Left Party has called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government to take a firm stand by summoning Israel’s ambassador in response to a series of Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon. These attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 254 individuals in a single day, prompting demands for decisive action.

According to Anadolu Agency, Left Party lawmaker Nicole Gohlke issued a statement on social media urging the German government to condemn the airstrikes. Gohlke emphasized the need to summon the Israeli ambassador, suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, and terminate all military cooperation with Israel.

Additionally, Omid Nouripour, a lawmaker from the opposition Greens, expressed significant concern about the escalating situation in Lebanon. He highlighted the urgency of European intervention to prevent further deterioration of the conflict, which poses risks not only to Lebanon but also to Europe.

Nouripour, speaking to public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk, questioned whether efforts could be made to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control. He advocated for a collaborative European approach to stabilize Lebanon and suggested initiating talks with Israel to assess the impact of the ongoing military actions on regional security.

The recent Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon, marking one of the largest since the military offensive against Hezbollah began last month, resulted in at least 254 deaths and 1,165 injuries, as reported by Lebanon’s Civil Defense. This escalation has sparked concerns about the possibility of a renewed Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon, potentially extending to the Litani River.
