Germany Acknowledges Trkiye and Egypt’s Role in Mediating Iran Conflict

Berlin: Germany's foreign minister expressed gratitude on Wednesday towards Trkiye and Egypt for their mediation efforts aimed at ending the Iran conflict, emphasizing that the resolution lies in diplomatic negotiations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, speaking at a press conference in Berlin, highlighted Germany's ongoing collaboration with the US and other partners to support the ceasefire and advance negotiations between the US and Iran towards a diplomatic resolution. Wadephul stated the importance of resolving the conflict through negotiations rather than military means. He acknowledged the unique positions of Trkiye and Egypt in mediation and expressed Germany's gratitude for their efforts, while also noting Germany's own diplomatic contributions.

Wadephul emphasized that any agreement to conclude the war must guarantee that Iran does not pose a future nuclear threat, supporting US President Donald Trump's stance on the matter. He also announced that Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled to travel to Paris on Friday for discussions regarding the Iran conflict and the Strait of Hormuz.

The foreign minister reiterated Germany's readiness to play a constructive role in the post-war scenario, including the potential deployment of the German navy to ensure secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Wadephul declared it unacceptable for any single nation to control the sea lanes or impose customs duties in the strait, insisting on guaranteed free passage in the future.

Wadephul underlined the importance of maritime trade for the global economy, stating that the free passage through the Strait of Hormuz is crucial not only for Gulf States and neighboring Asian countries but for the entire international community.
