Berlin: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed skepticism on Wednesday regarding the prospects of ending the conflict in Ukraine, despite recent diplomatic initiatives by the United States. During a press briefing alongside European Council President Antonio Costa in Berlin, Merz conveyed concerns over Russia's unwillingness to engage in serious discussions aimed at halting the ongoing war.

According to Anadolu Agency, Merz stated, "At the moment, we have little indication that the Russian government or the Russian president is ready to enter into serious talks about ending the war." He emphasized that the German government, alongside its allies, has consistently sought to facilitate a diplomatic resolution. However, Merz highlighted that Russia's persistent reluctance to engage in dialogue has diminished the chances of reaching a peaceful resolution in the near term.

Despite the challenges, Merz reaffirmed Germany's commitment to intensifying diplomatic efforts to conclude the war. He clarified that Germany's support for Ukraine is aimed not at prolonging the conflict but at finding a resolution, stating, "Everything we do to support Ukraine is not intended to prolong the war, but rather to bring it to an end."

Germany has been a prominent supporter of Ukraine, providing advanced military equipment, financial aid, and participating in Western sanctions against Moscow since the conflict began in February 2022.

European Council President Costa echoed Merz's sentiments, urging Russia to cease its military actions and reaffirming the European Union's continued support for Ukraine. "It is time for Russia to end this war, not to escalate or extend it," Costa remarked, highlighting the EU's commitment to assisting Ukraine throughout the conflict, in negotiations, and in post-war reconstruction.

Costa also addressed recent hybrid threats across Europe, including drone activities and sabotage targeting critical infrastructure. He expressed solidarity with Germany in light of these threats, citing an attempted Russian drone attack in Leipzig as an example of the challenges faced by European nations.

Costa lauded Germany's increased investment in security and defense, acknowledging its crucial role in bolstering Europe's collective defense capabilities.
