Berlin: Germany's crude steel production experienced a significant drop in the first half of the year, attributed to ongoing economic challenges and intense import competition. The German Steel Association released data indicating a double-digit decline in production, highlighting the pressures faced by the industry.

According to Anadolu Agency, Germany's crude steel production fell by 12% year-on-year from January to June, reaching 17.1 million tons. The German Steel Association emphasized that the economic downturn, coupled with substantial import pressure, continues to severely affect the steel sector.

The association stated that the industry's situation remains extremely tense, reflecting the severe impact on Germany's industrial landscape. Kerstin Maria Rippel, managing director of the German Steel Association, noted that the production slump mirrors levels not seen since the 2009 financial crisis. Rippel pointed out that domestic demand from crucial sectors like construction, mechanical engineering, and the automotive industry remains weak, exacerbating the industry's struggles.

Rippel further stressed the need for a high-level summit involving political leaders and industry representatives to address the challenges facing the steel sector. The call for a "steel summit" reflects the urgency of the situation, with the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and Federal Council being urged to engage in discussions to support the industry.
