Greece Implements Ban on Social Media for Children Under 15

Athens:The Greek parliament has passed a bill that prohibits children under the age of 15 from using major social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, starting January 1, 2027.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, this new legislation mandates that social media platforms verify users' ages using a digital token system which confirms age eligibility without compromising user identities.

The law was passed with the exclusive backing of the ruling center-right New Democracy party. The main opposition party, PASOK, chose to abstain from the vote, while other opposition parties opposed the legislation. Despite the social media restrictions, the law does not prevent children from accessing the internet for educational purposes and digital communication.
