Bissau: Gunfire was reported near the presidential palace in Guinea-Bissau as tensions escalated following the recent presidential election, with two candidates separately claiming victory.

According to Anadolu Agency, the situation was confirmed by both French and local media outlets. Radio TV Bantaba reported that gunshots could be heard in Bissau, particularly near the square. The contested election saw Fernando Dias, an independent candidate, and the incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embalo both declaring themselves the winner as the nation awaited the official results.

Embalo informed French outlet Jeune Afrique that he was detained on Wednesday around noon in his office at the presidential palace. Along with him, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Gen. Biague Na Ntan, Vice Gen. Mamadou Toure, and Interior Minister Botche Cande were also detained. Embalo described the incident as a 'coup' led by the commander of the land forces, though he noted no violence was used against him.

Around midday, gunfire was also reported near the country's electoral commission's offices, according to the French outlet, which cited multiple sources. Meanwhile, Dias called on the military to remain neutral and allow the electoral process to continue as planned. He reiterated his claim of victory but expressed willingness to wait for the official results, which were expected to be announced on Thursday.

The electoral commission had previously warned all parties against announcing any unofficial results, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order until the final outcome was declared. Ghana's Ambassador Baba Kamara, head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission, remarked that the electoral process had proceeded smoothly. Twelve candidates were vying for the presidency in the election.

President Embalo, who took office in 2020, has faced several coup attempts, highlighting the intense political rivalry and instability within the country.
