Cairo: A high-level delegation from Palestinian group Hamas arrived in Cairo on Sunday and held talks with Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad to discuss the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. According to Anadolu Agency, Egypt’s state-run Al-Qahera News channel reported that the meeting addressed ways to complete the implementation of US President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza.
Hamas expressed appreciation for Egyptian efforts to strengthen the Gaza ceasefire and reiterated its commitment to Trump’s plan to alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s population and initiate reconstruction. In a statement, the group detailed its discussions on political and field developments in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, highlighting daily Israeli violations and its opposition to the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement and President Trump’s plan.
The delegation also discussed Israeli actions against Palestinian prisoners, labeling them as a ‘destructive policy’ that warrants regional and international attention. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem noted that the talks aimed to update mediators on Israel’s actions and ensure adherence to the Gaza roadmap.
Separately, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with Trump’s adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner in New Alamein. The presidency statement revealed discussions on Palestinian territories and Middle East developments, with Sisi emphasizing the importance of fulfilling obligations under the Gaza agreement.
Kushner also met with senior Hamas officials, marking the first such encounter since last October. Axios reported that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s high representative for Gaza, were also present. The meeting involved Turkish, Egyptian, and Qatari officials, focusing on converting commitments into operational steps.
The backdrop to these discussions includes a deadly Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, resulting in significant casualties. Despite a truce in place since October 2025, continued attacks have caused more deaths and injuries, as per Gaza’s Health Ministry.
