Gaza: The Palestinian group Hamas is prepared to enter a new round of negotiations aimed at establishing a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, according to Khalil al-Hayya, the head of Hamas in Gaza and the group's chief negotiator. Al-Hayya emphasized that communications with mediators are ongoing, as he announced the group's willingness to engage in serious discussions to reach an agreement.
According to Anadolu Agency, in a recorded speech, al-Hayya stated that Hamas did not reject the recent proposal by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff but instead offered observations and potential improvements. The proposed amendments by Hamas are intended to prevent the Israeli occupation from reverting to actions such as incursions, forced displacement, and to ensure the dignified entry of aid and relief to the people in Gaza.
Al-Hayya also declared that Hamas is ready to transfer governance in Gaza to any professional and nationally agreed-upon Palestinian body. He highlighted Hamas's ongoing efforts to work with all parties to reach an agreement that aligns with the fundamental rights and demands of the Palestinian people, leading to a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal of the occupation from Gaza, urgent humanitarian relief, and an end to the blockade.
He identified the Israeli government, particularly Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as the main obstacle to reaching an agreement, stating that Netanyahu's personal and ideological motives are preventing the end of the war. Al-Hayya pointed out that Hamas has demonstrated flexibility and a positive attitude toward proposals, having accepted most offers since the aggression resumed in March.
Al-Hayya further mentioned gestures of goodwill, such as releasing Israeli-American soldier Edan Alexander. He criticized Israel for maintaining control over humanitarian aid through a military mechanism that international organizations reject as a violation of international law. He also condemned the continuous military and political support Israel receives, referencing the recent US veto at the UN Security Council against a resolution demanding an end to the blockade and the urgent entry of aid into Gaza.
The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions against civilians in the enclave. Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has continued its offensive in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 54,600 Palestinians and raising concerns about a potential famine among the enclave's inhabitants.
