Washington: Harvard University has initiated a legal battle against President Donald Trump's recent proclamation that bans US entry for incoming international students. This move by Harvard comes in response to Trump's decision to limit foreign student visas at the prestigious institution.

According to Anadolu Agency, the proclamation prevents new Harvard students from entering the US under F, M, or J visas. Additionally, it instructs Secretary of State Marco Rubio to "consider revoking" current F, M, or J visas for students already at Harvard who meet the criteria outlined in the proclamation.

In its amended complaint submitted to the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Harvard described the proclamation's impact as "immediate and irreparable," arguing that it obstructs the educational pursuits of thousands of students while infringing on the university's teaching rights. Harvard further criticized the proclamation for lacking a valid national security rationale, highlighting that the restrictions specifically target students attending Harvard.

President Trump, on his part, indicated optimism about reaching an agreement with Harvard, suggesting that the university is expected to provide a list of its foreign students. He reiterated his administration's stance that foreign student enrollment should be capped at around 15% and expressed a willingness to see international students continue their studies in the US.

The Trump administration's broader policy measures have included threats to withhold federal funding from universities, including Harvard, in response to campus protests and diversity programs. This has already resulted in a $3 billion funding cut and a warning regarding Harvard's tax-exempt status.
