Damascus: The Port of Mokha on Yemen's Red Sea coast has once again become a focal point in the ongoing conflict between Yemen's government forces and the Houthi rebels, following a deadly attack by the Houthis that resulted in at least seven fatalities and numerous injuries on Sunday.
According to Anadolu Agency, Mokha, a significant seaport located in the western Taiz province near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, is under the control of Yemen's internationally recognized government. The strategic location of Mokha has made it a critical flashpoint in the conflict, as government forces, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, face off against the Iran-aligned Houthis.
The recent Houthi attack caused substantial damage to various parts of the port, including the quay, facilities for servicing ships, and residential neighborhoods. This incident echoes a similar strike in September 2021, which inflicted damage on operational facilities and food warehouses at the port.
Mokha's strategic significance stems from its proximity to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a crucial maritime chokepoint that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. This position makes the port a valuable asset for both the Yemeni government and the Houthis. For the Yemeni government, retaining control over Mokha is vital to prevent the Houthis from extending their influence further south along the coastline. Meanwhile, the Houthis see the port as a strategic link for their military operations and a base from which they can conduct attacks on ships transiting the Red Sea.
As conflict reignites along several Yemeni fronts, there are growing concerns about a potential escalation into full-scale war. Since late 2023, the Houthis have intensified their involvement in regional hostilities, launching attacks on Israel and commercial shipping in the Red Sea, coinciding with the Gaza war. The renewed fighting poses significant threats to regional security and vital maritime trade routes, underscoring the critical importance of the Mokha port in Yemen's broader conflict landscape.
