Taiz:Two children have been killed and three civilians wounded in Houthi attacks in Yemen's southwestern Taiz province over a 24-hour period, as reported by a rights group. The group also reported the abduction of four individuals in these incidents.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the Yemen Network for Rights and Freedoms documented 21 crimes and violations by the Houthis within the past day in Taiz governorate. These included the firing of approximately 213 projectiles at residential areas, which resulted in injuries to three civilians, including two women, and the abduction of four residents who were taken to unknown locations.
The rights group further accused the Houthis of maintaining a siege and imposing restrictions on civilian movement and the delivery of essential supplies. Additionally, the group reported that the Houthis raided and looted three homes in the al-Hujariya area south of Taiz, damaging seven others, with two being completely destroyed. The group called on the international community to take action to protect Taiz residents from repeated shelling and the ongoing siege, expressing concerns about the diminishing capacity of residents and health facilities to cope with the crisis.
The Houthis have not made any immediate comments on these allegations. These developments occur amid a military escalation that began in July, described as the most extensive since a truce initiated in April 2022. Since October 5, Yemeni government forces have been carrying out Operation Dawn of Yemen, with the aim of regaining control of state institutions from the Houthis and recapturing the capital, Sanaa.
The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing since the Houthis seized Sanaa and several other provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition intervention in March 2015 to support the internationally recognized government. The Houthis currently control much of northern and western Yemen, while government forces and their allies hold Aden and large parts of the country's southern and eastern provinces.
