Houthis Launch Ballistic Missiles Toward Strategic Yemeni Coastal Area

Ankara: The Houthis fired seven ballistic missiles toward the coastal area of Ras al-Ara in southern Yemen's Lahij province on Friday, a Yemeni government source told Anadolu, as the group expanded its reach near the strategic Bab el-Mandab Strait.

According to Anadolu Agency, the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the missiles were launched toward the government-held district. There was no immediate official comment from the Yemeni government.

Earlier Friday, the Yemeni news website Al-Masdar Online reported that the group 'resumed its bombardment of Ras al-Ara with ballistic missiles.' Ras al-Ara, controlled by government forces, is located in western Lahij province near the strategic Bab el-Mandab Strait. The area had also been struck by Houthi ballistic missiles early Friday, as per the website. The report did not provide information about casualties, damage, or the nature of the site targeted. The Houthis did not immediately comment on the report.

In another development, a Yemeni government military source informed Anadolu on condition of anonymity that the Houthis had seized the strategic Mayyun Island, also known as Perim Island, and the coastal city of Dhubab, strengthening their control over the Bab el-Mandab Strait. The western coast holds strategic importance because it extends along the Red Sea and lies near the Bab el-Mandab Strait, one of the world's most important international maritime routes.

Territorial control in Yemen has shifted in recent days as confrontations between government forces and the Houthis have intensified since early July following years of relative calm. The Houthis seized the entire western province of Al-Hudaydah after capturing the Hays and Al-Khawkhah districts. They also advanced through western Taiz province and captured Red Sea coastal cities, including the strategic city of Mokha, extending their reach toward the Bab el-Mandab Strait. Yemeni government forces, meanwhile, have advanced in northern Al-Jawf province and moved closer to Al-Hazm, the provincial capital. Fighting also continues on fronts in Marib, Al-Bayda, and Al-Dhale provinces.
