Ilhan Omar’s Legal Team Challenges FBI Home Search

Washington:US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is contesting the legality of a search conducted at her Washington home, as her defense team demands the return of seized property and recordings made during the operation.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the search was carried out by Homeland Security Investigations agents under a federal judge-approved warrant. Omar's legal representatives argue that the search was 'neither justified nor lawful' and claim that the agents did not follow the judge's instructions, such as notifying the US House general counsel prior to executing the warrant. They also allege that Omar and her attorneys were not given a copy of the warrant beforehand.

The investigation reportedly examines aspects of how Omar, who arrived from Somalia decades ago, obtained US citizenship. Her lawyers insist there is no legitimate basis for suggesting any violation of citizenship laws. They further allege that Omar was prevented from contacting her attorneys for over an hour after the search commenced.

A Justice Department spokeswoman dismissed the allegations, labeling the letter from Omar's lawyers as 'riddled with false allegations and inaccuracies,' and stated that all court orders and legal obligations were adhered to. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro defended the operation, asserting it was approved by a federal judge with constitutional considerations.

Omar's legal team also accuses prosecutors of misusing the grand jury process and claims the investigation is politically motivated, violating Omar's constitutional rights. The operation occurred three weeks before the November midterm elections, where Omar is seeking re-election. Her lawyers criticize the Justice Department for potentially breaching its policy of avoiding public investigative actions involving political candidates close to elections to prevent the appearance of partisan interference.

Omar has been a frequent target of criticism from President Donald Trump, conservatives, and GOP-led congressional investigations.
