New York:Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has expressed New Delhi's concerns regarding a US law targeting countries that purchase Russian energy. This was discussed during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York.

According to Anadolu Agency, Jaishankar shared on the social media platform X that he emphasized India's interests and concerns pertaining to the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act. The discussions also included developments in the Gulf and Ukraine.

Rubio, in a separate post on X, highlighted that the US and India are strengthening their strategic partnership and coordinating on key regional priorities and upcoming multilateral efforts.

The US House of Representatives recently passed the sanctions legislation with a 262-159 vote, and it was subsequently signed by President Donald Trump. The act authorizes the Trump administration to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas, including India and China.

New Delhi has previously stated that the legislation could have significant implications for both the bilateral relationship and the international energy market. Earlier this year, the US and India reached an interim framework deal to resolve a bilateral trade dispute. The tension between the two nations escalated last year due to 50% tariffs imposed on Indian goods by the Trump administration, partly in response to India's purchases of Russian oil amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Trade between India and Russia hit a record high of $68.7 billion last year.
