Indian Prime Minister Modi Begins Visit to Malaysia with Focus on Strengthening Ties


Kuala lumpur: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kuala Lumpur to kick off his two-day visit to Malaysia.



According to Anadolu Agency, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed Modi at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The two leaders shared a ride, setting the tone for a visit aimed at fostering closer ties between their nations. Modi expressed his enthusiasm on the social media platform X, highlighting the importance of strengthening the friendship between India and Malaysia.



The visit is expected to bolster the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, with a focus on enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors. Modi emphasized the aim to deepen defense and security ties, as well as to expand economic and innovation partnerships and explore new areas of collaboration.



During the visit, an event was held for the Indian diaspora, reflecting the strong cultural connections between the two nations. Modi and Anwar are also scheduled to engage in a bilateral meeting in Putrajaya. The discussions will culminate in the exchange of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as anti-corruption efforts, seafarer certification, and disaster management.



The Malaysian Foreign Ministry stated that additional agreements will include a memorandum of collaboration on labor and exchanges related to semiconductors, healthcare, national security, and vocational education. This visit comes against the backdrop of robust bilateral trade, which reached $18.59 billion in 2025.



Approximately 2.75 million people of Indian origin reside in Malaysia, making up about 9% of the country’s total population, as per data from the High Commission of India.
