Irkutsk:Indonesia has increased health surveillance at international entry points after reports of a laboratory worker in Russia dying from pneumonia suspected of being linked to the plague.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Indonesian Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and has strengthened preparedness at airports and seaports. Aji Muhawarman, head of the Health Ministry's Bureau of Communication and Public Information, stated that there has been no official notification from the International Health Regulations National Focal Point or the World Health Organization's Event Information Site necessitating specific vigilance.
Despite the lack of an international alert, Indonesia has intensified health checks, particularly at international airports and seaports in Bali. Measures implemented include health declarations through the SATUSEHAT Health Pass system, monitoring travelers for symptoms, risk-based assessments of incoming vessels, and surveillance of rodents and fleas.
Travelers exhibiting symptoms such as fever, coughing, or shortness of breath may be referred to designated infectious disease hospitals for isolation and treatment. The precautionary steps come after the death of a 28-year-old employee at Russia's Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia.
Russian authorities have stated that the cause of death was 'pneumonia of unknown etiology' and testing did not find any microorganisms related to her work. Nearly 200 contacts are reportedly under medical observation as investigations continue.
