Indonesian Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 65 as Thousands Displaced

Labuan bajo: The death toll from the powerful weekend earthquake in Indonesia rose to 65 on Monday, an official from the country's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) told Anadolu. Berton Panjaitan, head of the communications center at BNPB, revealed that more than 12,000 people remained displaced in compounds and villages due to fears of aftershocks.

According to Anadolu Agency, Berton Panjaitan stated over the phone from Labuan Bajo, in West Manggarai Regency, that the fears of aftershocks were the primary reason for the displacement. The earthquake, which struck on Saturday with a magnitude of 7.7, caused widespread damage in East Nusa Tenggara, where the popular tourist hub of Labuan Bajo is located.

In addition to the 65 confirmed fatalities, approximately 135 individuals have been reported injured. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. However, Berton mentioned that there have been no reports of missing persons. He expressed hope that there would be no further loss of life.

The official further noted that while authorities are addressing basic needs such as health care and water, relief supplies to several affected villages are expected to be delivered by Tuesday following the repair of damaged roads.

Meanwhile, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto led prayers for the earthquake victims on Monday during a ceremony marking the nation's 81st Independence Day. He called for a moment of silence to honor the heroes of the nation's independence and prayed for those affected by natural disasters in Sumatra, East Nusa Tenggara, and other parts of Indonesia.
