Washington: Iran acknowledges the seriousness of President Donald Trump's approach to nuclear negotiations, according to the US State Department, as both nations gear up for significant discussions.
According to Anadolu Agency, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce indicated that Iran recognizes the gravity of President Trump's stance. Bruce conveyed this sentiment during an interview with Fox News, noting that Iran is prepared to engage in discussions, acknowledging Trump's reputation for following through on his commitments. This comes in the wake of Trump's announcement that direct talks with Iran are set to commence on Saturday.
Bruce reiterated the administration's unwavering position on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. She highlighted President Trump's resolute statement on the matter, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that Iran does not develop a nuclear arsenal. When questioned about the potential involvement of Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the talks, Bruce refrained from confirming details but assured that representatives would be of "almost the highest ranks," aligning with Trump's assertions.
Bruce also chose not to delve into Trump's comments regarding Houthi attacks on vessels, which he suggested would be considered acts of aggression by Iran. She maintained her stance on avoiding speculation, citing the complexity of the situation and the limitations of her role.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have been targeting ships in various strategic locations, including the Red and Arabian Seas, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. These actions are reported to be in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where recent Israeli operations have resulted in over 50,700 casualties.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that indirect high-level talks between Iran and the US are scheduled to occur in Oman on Saturday. This announcement contrasts with Trump's statement suggesting that the discussions would be direct. Araghchi remarked on social media platform X that the upcoming talks represent both an opportunity and a test for the United States, emphasizing that the "ball is in America's court."
President Trump has consistently warned of potential military action should the negotiations fail, reiterating that Tehran would face significant consequences without reaching an agreement.
