Ankara: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot engaged in a phone conversation on Tuesday to address the ongoing diplomatic tensions after France summoned Iran's charge d'affaires. This move came in response to an incident involving French Embassy staff in Tehran.

According to Anadolu Agency, Araghchi expressed concerns over what he described as the 'unconventional actions' of two French diplomats in Tehran, labeling their behavior as unacceptable. A statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of adhering to host country laws and international diplomatic norms for the smooth functioning of foreign missions. Araghchi urged the French government to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

Araghchi also linked the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to what he termed as US violations of commitments under a framework plan agreed upon by both sides last month, along with Washington's 'escalatory actions.' He asserted that the responsibility for the ramifications of the situation lies with the party that deviated from the agreement, thus jeopardizing diplomacy and regional stability.

The diplomatic conversation occurred shortly after France called upon Iran's charge d'affaires to address what Paris deemed an 'extremely serious' act of intimidation against two French Embassy staff members in Tehran. French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux highlighted that the incident, involving the detention and questioning of two embassy employees by Iranian security services, with one reportedly being physically assaulted, amounted to a 'flagrant violation' of international law and the Vienna Conventions.

France has demanded that Iranian authorities investigate the matter, hold those accountable, and ensure the safety of French diplomatic personnel, in accordance with international obligations.
