Muscat: Iran and Oman will persist in their political and technical discussions on managing maritime traffic through the crucial Strait of Hormuz, as stated by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Araghchi announced this continuation of dialogue after a brief visit to Muscat, where he met Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, accompanied by legal and technical representatives from both nations. The meetings primarily revolved around coordination efforts between Iran and Oman, the nations flanking the strait, to manage its operations and vessel movements.
According to Anadolu Agency, Araghchi confirmed Iran's intent to strengthen ties with Oman. Omani Foreign Minister Albusaidi emphasized Oman's commitment to diplomacy as a means to prevent further regional tension and expressed optimism that the recent framework deal between Iran and the US would enhance regional security. Oman's Foreign Ministry highlighted the Saturday discussions, which focused on ensuring the safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz amidst recent developments.
The ongoing discussions are set to continue at both technical and political levels, aiming for mutual understandings based on international law. This dialogue occurs in the context of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, after recent US strikes on Iranian targets following attacks on commercial vessels in the strait. Iran has responded with missile and drone strikes targeting US military facilities in the region, accusing Washington of breaching their June 17 memorandum of understanding. Subsequently, US President Donald Trump declared the memorandum nullified.
