Iran Calls for End to Iraq Flight Restrictions

Tehran:Iran has urged Iraq to remove flight restrictions and resume normal air travel between the two nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of lifting these restrictions, highlighting the impact on passengers such as pilgrims, patients, students, and businesspeople. The call was made with a respect for Iraq's national sovereignty, urging 'appropriate decisions' for restoring airline operations.

Iran has accused the United States of employing sanctions and 'economic terrorism' to hinder its trade and air connections with other countries. The ministry noted that the restrictions are contrary to the interests of both Iran and Iraq.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry stressed the deep historical, religious, cultural, and people-to-people ties between the two countries, advocating for transportation management that is independent and forward-looking, aligning with their shared interests.

The appeal comes in the context of ongoing US sanctions on Iran, which include impacts on its aviation sector. Washington maintains that these sanctions aim to limit the financial resources available to the Iranian government, while Iran argues that they disrupt normal economic and transportation activities.
