Iran Considers Withholding Support for OIC Yemen Resolution

Baghdad:Iran announced it might not endorse a resolution on Yemen at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting unless its demands for 'fairness and balance' are met.

According to Anadolu Agency, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking at the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, reported that significant discussions on Yemen had occurred. He noted that while Saudi Arabia had presented its views, Iran and other countries also shared their perspectives. The resolution remains under negotiation.

Araghchi emphasized that Iran seeks fairness in the resolution and stated that Iran could not support the proposal if this is not achieved. He highlighted that many OIC members align with Saudi Arabia's stance and mentioned Iran's extensive consultations with other member states on the matter.

The Yemen conflict began in 2014 when Iran-backed Houthis took control of Sanaa, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 to support Yemen's internationally recognized government. Recent Houthi attacks have targeted Saudi Arabia, including its oil infrastructure, following a declared maritime blockade.

In addition to the Yemen discussions, Araghchi addressed Iran's relations with the US, referencing a '7-day plan' proposed by Iran outlining conditions to Washington. He mentioned that Tehran was still preparing a response to the US views, suggesting that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent negotiations depend on US sincerity.

The OIC meeting, marking its 52nd session in Baghdad, involves delegates from 57 countries discussing issues like Yemen and Palestine. Araghchi expressed Iran's commitment to Iraq, hoping that Baghdad's new leadership role in the OIC and a new secretary-general would revitalize the organization. He also urged the OIC to actively resolve disputes among Muslim nations.
