Iran Holds Keys to War Despite US Threats, Says Former EU Commissioner

Paris: Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton stated on Monday that Iran holds the keys to war and that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on its will, despite ongoing threats from US President Donald Trump. Breton made these remarks during an interview with French broadcaster BFM TV, emphasizing Iran's critical position in the ongoing conflict.

According to Anadolu Agency, Breton highlighted that Iran is in a position of strength, having organized itself strategically with support from China, which supplies components and expertise. He described Iran's involvement in an "asymmetric war" against what he termed "the best army in the world," while noting that US military reserves are depleting at an alarming rate.

Breton pointed out that since the onset of hostilities, the US has utilized the equivalent of two years' production of the Patriot missile system, leading to growing concerns within the Pentagon. He underscored that Iran has been preparing for such a confrontation for 40 years, and mentioned that President Trump is facing pressure, particularly from voters, amid the escalating conflict.

The tension in the region intensified after the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on February 28, resulting in more than 1,400 casualties, including the death of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has executed drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and other locations, including Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. Additionally, Iran has imposed restrictions on the movement of ships through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
