Iran Intercepts and Destroys Drone Over Tehran

Tehran: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated on Tuesday it intercepted and destroyed an armed drone over Tehran.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Hermes drone was shot down "in the sky of Tehran by the IRGC's advanced new defense system under the control of the country's integrated air defense network," as mentioned in a statement by the IRGC and reported by the state news agency IRNA. There have been no details provided regarding any casualties resulting from this incident.

The backdrop to this development includes ongoing airstrikes by the US and Israel on Iran since February 28, which have resulted in over 1,340 fatalities, including the death of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries that host US military assets. These retaliatory strikes have caused casualties and damage to infrastructure, while also affecting global markets and aviation.
