Iran Parliament Speaker Cites ‘Good Intentions but No Trust’ Ahead of US Talks

Islamabad: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqher Qalibaf expressed reservations on Saturday regarding negotiations with the US, stating that Tehran has ‘good intentions but no trust.’ Qalibaf made these remarks upon his arrival at Islamabad Airport, emphasizing past failures in negotiations with the US.

According to Anadolu Agency, Qalibaf highlighted that previous negotiations with the Americans have often ended in failure and breaches of contract. He pointed out that within a span of less than a year, amidst ongoing negotiations, the US attacked Iran and committed numerous war crimes, despite Iran’s good intentions.

Qalibaf reiterated Iran’s readiness to reach an agreement if the US demonstrates sincerity in negotiations. He stated that should the American side be prepared to make a real agreement and acknowledge the rights of the Iranian people, Iran is equally prepared to reciprocate with an agreement.

He cautioned that Tehran would respond decisively if the talks were used as a facade for insincere actions. Qalibaf emphasized that Iran is prepared to uphold its rights with determination, relying on the power of its people.

In contrast, US Vice President JD Vance, prior to his departure for the talks in Pakistan, indicated a willingness to negotiate in good faith if Iran is sincere. However, he warned that any attempts to deceive the US negotiating team would not be well-received.

The negotiations are set against a backdrop of a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan, along with Trkiye, China, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. This ceasefire follows 40 days of conflict initiated by US and Israeli attacks against Iran on February 28. The agreement included both sides meeting in Islamabad to pursue a lasting peace.
